Wow Wow Wow!! My family rented a house on nearby Round Lake, and the 2nd day I went out scouting for eating establishments... passed it right by. Saw it on the way back from Tawas, and never gave it a second look. I mean, just look at the picture below. I think a 12 year old made their signage, and the parking lot is a mixture of old pickup trucks (no offense). The ice cream shop next door was great, but I was turned off by the exterior of Chef's Table. I live and die by Yelp and Trip Advisor, so I looked around. This place rated among the highest!! No way...must be some mistake! Well... I called, and asked if they could accomodate a large group (11) for dinner (was a Saturday night). The woman was such a sweetheart on the phone, we had to go. OMG OMG OMG... My 8-ounce sirloin (Chef's special of the night-$11.99) was like a filet. Perfect char on the outside, pink in the middle. ZERO fat. Came with candied carrots (YUM) and sweet potato fluff complete with marshmallow and crumb topping. Out of this world! My Man-Child had a burger ($6.99) that was as big as his head, and declared it the best bacon and cheddar burger on the face of the planet. My brother had the same, plus jalapenos, and raved about it. Both had fries left over...never happens! Little Sis had a gorgeous looking salad she loved ($7), and the 4 kiddies (ages 7-13) were content with grilled cheese, mac and cheese, chicken fingers ($4), etc... Mom and Pop had meatloaf ($8) and chicken fried steak ($9). Both are STILL talking about their meals, 3 weeks later!! You get the idea... everything we tried, we loved. Small staff (Meg, our waitress, was a little dynamo...probably had 6 other tables besides our large group, and did fabulously. Even put up with my humor...If she's single, I WILL marry her someday :) ). We kept hearing about the homemade pies, so I was a little disappointed that you have to put in your pie order (I wanted whole pies to go, not slices) 24 hours in advance, but we were so stuffed we couldn't eat it that night anyway! Every other table had slices of pie for dessert ($4.99) and there were more than 20 to choose from... more than 4" high, some of them. Definitely coming back, and definitely having PIE!! BTW, our group of 11 people ate (very well) for $89 plus tip... how do you beat that??? Spent half that much for 3 people eating lunch in Tawas!

After reading the reviews .. We thought we would try this place. But when we pulled up we thought that we must be at the wrong place. Went in and had an awesome meal. Perch was awesome and service was great. Don't be fooled by the way it looks!

Simple unpretentious food with massive portions for a pittance. The liver was thin, grilled with a lovely char, and plenty of caramelized onions. Raspberry cream pie was too much. Guilty I am but I ate it all. The salad, however, was tiny and old and sparse.

Good salad with dried cherries, blue cheese & chicken. Delicious honey fried chicken. Yummy squash soup. Dessert was fantastic! I've cream sandwich was two huge chocolate chip cookies filled with vanilla. White chocolate pecan pie was wonderful. Don't be put off by the bland building. The food was worth the long drive we made to get there.

The person who took us here said "Don't get freaked out by the appearance of the place." The food was AWESOME! My wife a a perfectly rare prime rib, just the way she likes it. I had the honey fried chicken and it was very tasty. The au gratin potatoes were fantastic. And the there are the pies......OMG! Service was OK but, they were very busy. The food made up for the outside appearance and the slow service. Definitely worth a trip.

The best perch I have had in years. The cleanest kitchen I have seen in years. I can't wait to go back and eat there again.

Tiny place, 12 tables, 1 waitress that I saw. I think it's been there since the Mayflower landed, as I recall it from when my parents had a cabin on one of the lakes when I was a kid. And that was many decades ago. We stopped for lunch on a driveby trip down memory lane, and I'm delighted that we did. Hubby had a mushroom swiss burger with chips & a cup of taco soup, the $5.50 lunch special. He said it was terrific. I ordered the patty melt, which had a huge burger patty on it, grilled onions & swiss, on marble rye. Wonderful! Could only eat half. Dessert menu looked amazing, but we were too full. Place had several locals in & out, and appears to be well loved. There's a number of framed certificates where locals vote for "best of the best" and they were awarded top prize in various categories. Place doesn't look like much, but you'll be glad you walked in the door.

This place is TINY! And unless you know your way around the chain o' lakes (about 8 miles west of Tawas), might be hard to find but so worth it if you are up in NE Michigan during the summer or hunting season. An unassuming building that fits the laid-back, retiree atmosphere of the area...this small joint houses about 7 tables and some of the best breakfast I have ever had. First off, their omelets are huge and amazing. Each come with hashbrowns and your choice of toast. All the standards (white, wheat, rye) but definately get their homemade bread. Ridiculously good! Usually, at most restaurants, the toast gets shoved to the side. Not here because it's amazing. Even I can't believe I'm this excited about toast! The corned beef hash is equally yummy. I have had take out at lunch and dinner and they always have interesting specials. Stir-fry, pasta's, pot pies...everything has been fantastic. Fitting in with the "homey" feel is their homemade desserts. They always have an amazing variety of pies...mississippi mud, peanut butter, turtle, banana cream and of course, fantastic fruit pies. They sell them whole and buy the slice. Don't be a sucker...get a whole pie, because you'll wish you had more later. Rhubarb is a particular favorite among the fam. Since Chef's Table is a local stop, the staff never changes and are some of the friendliest waitstaff I have ever encountered. When I look at some of the restaurants in heavier populated areas, they have 10-20 reviews. But it's these hidden gems, in resort-ish area's, that often offer the biggest surprise.
